Creating the Soundtrack to Caribbean Culture
DJ Supreme is a Caribbean radio personality, international DJ, and music curator whose career spans more than two decades at the intersection of culture, community, and sound. Born and raised with Caribbean roots, he developed an early passion for music that would eventually take him from local block parties to international festival stages.
His story is one of dedication to a craft learning the technical foundations of DJing while simultaneously absorbing the deep cultural history of reggae, dancehall, soca, and the broader Caribbean music tradition. From his earliest sets, Supreme understood that a DJ's role is not merely to play records, but to be a cultural steward: selecting, sequencing, and presenting music in a way that tells a story and moves a crowd.
"Music is the thread that connects Caribbean people no matter where they are in the world. Every set I play is a conversation with that culture."
— DJ SupremeEarly Life & First Steps
Growing up immersed in Caribbean music, Supreme found himself drawn to the selectors and sound systems that filled community events and local dances. He began collecting vinyl early, spending hours studying the craft of mixing, blending, and reading a room. His natural ear for music and tireless work ethic set him apart from the beginning.
His first radio appearance was a watershed moment the realization that broadcasting offered a way to reach not just the people in the room, but an entire community. Radio, he quickly understood, was the most powerful medium for Caribbean music: intimate, immediate, and deeply personal.
Learning from the Best
Among the most formative chapters of Supreme's career was his immersion in the world of Bobby Konders and Massive B, legendary figures in New York's Caribbean broadcasting scene. Massive B Sound System was not merely a radio station it was a cultural institution, a direct line between the Caribbean diaspora in New York and the music emerging from Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.
Studying under that influence, Supreme developed a deeper understanding of what it means to curate music for a diaspora community. He learned how to honor tradition while embracing the contemporary, how to balance the demands of entertainment with the responsibilities of cultural representation. Those lessons form the backbone of everything he has built since.
